Russian Saint's Answer to Catholic Heretics (St. Alexander Nevsky)

Having lost hope of taking Russia by force, the popes did not give up trying to seduce her with cunning and lies. In the year 1251, Innocent IV sent two cardinals to Saint Alexander — Galda and Remont. The pope insisted that Alexander's father, Grand Duke Yaroslav, shortly before his death, promised the minority of Plano-Carpini to convert to Catholicism, and that only death prevented him from fulfilling this intention.

The pope tried to convince Saint Alexander Nevsky to follow in the footsteps of his father, to imagine the benefits that the prince would receive from an alliance with the West and submission to the pope, and offered to help against the Tatars — the very enemies which Saint Alexander had only recently cleared from the Russian lands.

What could the noble prince, zealot, and defender of Russian Orthodoxy answer to this? The embassy was unconditionally rejected. Having consulted with his wise men, Saint Alexander answered the pope:

“From Adam until the flood, from the flood until the division of languages at Babel, until the time of Abraham, from Abraham until Augustus Caesar, from the time of Augustus until the Nativity of Christ, until HIs Passion and Resurrection, from the Resurrection and the Ascension into heaven until the kingdom of Constantine the Great, until the First Ecumenical Council of the Holy Fathers, and from the First to the Seventh Councils until now. We know all this goodness... we are faithful to these teachings... just as the Apostle preached the Gospel of Christ throughout the world, according to the same traditions of the saints, and the Fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils. And all of this we keep, but we do not accept teachings from you and we do not listen to your words.”

Amen! And let’s not listen to modern “Orthodox renovationists” who say otherwise.
