A Rare 16th Century Cross Was Found Under the Ancient Russian City of Rostov [1]

On the territory of the Samuilovsky building of the Rostov Kremlin archaeologists discovered a rare bone cross. Alexander Filyaev, director of the state museum-preserve, reported about it on his page in the social network.
On the front side of the cross depicts a crucifixion with the forthcoming Virgin Mary and John the Theologian. On the reverse is a full-length saint.
"The inscription is illegible and probably reads "Nicholas", possibly an image of St. Nicholas. According to preliminary data, the object dates from the 16th century. It was found in the layers, which were formed before the 50-60s of the XVII century - before the construction of the building. There is no doubt that the object was made by a professional master-cutter", said Alexander Filyaev.
According to him, it's the first find of this kind in the cultural layer of Rostov. There are no such crosses in the museum collection.
